Barracuda Networks has launched a new cloud-based service called Active DDoS Prevention, which integrates with the company’s Web Application Firewall (WAF) product to help guard application servers and prevent them from succumbing to DDoS (distributed denial of service) attacks.
What they lack in sophistication, DDoS attacks make up for in sheer destructiveness.
Instead of staging sophisticated hacks or other network intrusions, attackers who use DDoS techniques essentially bury websites and online services with an unrelenting flood of junk traffic. Naturally, target systems are overwhelmed and are rendered unusable until the attack relents.
“Even a small DDoS attack can knock a business offline – bringing all their online activity to a halt, including e-commerce, email, and VoIP phone systems. The Ponemon Institute found that on average, a DDoS attack causes $22,000 of damage per minute to the business attacked,” said from Barracuda’s Nitzan Miron, vice president of product management, Application Security Services.
Earlier this year, Verisign’s DDoS Trends Report for the first quarter of 2017 revealed that 59 percent of DDoS attacks peaked over 1 Gbps. Nearly a quarter (23 percent) peaked over 10 Gbps.
And the threat keeps growing, added Miron.
“DDoS attacks have been growing at over 200 percent year-over-year because of the ease with which they can do massive damage to their targets. DDoS attacks may be carried out for political, moral, or financial gain – with attackers many times demanding ransom to make the attack stop,” said Miron.
Active DDoS Prevention dovetails with the company’s existing application firewall technology, enabling customers to essentially switch on DDoS protection with no additional administrative overhead or infrastructure investment, according to the company. The solution can be deployed in virtual, public cloud and on-premise environments and capitalizes on the Barracuda Cloud’s volumetric DDoS attack filtering capabilities for robust, low-resource protection.
“Barracuda integrates DDoS defense into the application security solution – the Web Application Firewall. Having these two pieces work together ensures comprehensive defense against all types of DDoS that can be set up within minutes and automatically detects and defends against attacks,” Miron said. “Dedicated DDoS solutions only protect against some types of DDoS attacks, and can take weeks or months to configure.
The solution also makes DDoS protection attainable to smaller organizations with tight IT budgets, said the Barracuda executive. “Barracuda also offers its DDoS protection at a price point that is affordable to SMEs [small and medium-sized enterprises].”
