Modernizing Authentication — What It Takes to Transform Secure Access
Game publisher OP Productions LLC recently announced that the forum and game databases for the online game The War Z had been breached, and the the game and forums have been taken down temporarily in response (h/t Softpedia).
The hackers apparently accessed users' game and forum e-mail addresses, encrypted game and forum passwords, in-game character names, and IP addresses. No payment information was exposed.
"We encrypt all passwords," the announcement states. "However, there is a possibility that simple passwords can be obtained using brute force even if they are encrypted. Our research shows that many users are not using strong passwords. Therefore, we are asking all of our players to please change your passwords immediately."
The company says it has hired outside experts to investigate the incident, has identified the ways access was obtained by the hackers, and has enhanced its security in response.https://o1.qnsr.com/log/p.gif?;n=203;c=204634421;s=15939;x=7936;f=201702151714490;u=j;z=TIMESTAMP;a=20304455;e=i
This isn't The War Z's first experience with cyber attacks -- earlier this year, the game was targeted by a series of DDoS attacks that briefly made it inaccessible.
