Establishing Digital Trust: Don't Sacrifice Security for Convenience
BBC News reports that Jared James Abrahams, 19, recently pled guilty to hacking into at least two dozen women's computers and taking control of their webcams, including the computer and webcam of Miss Teen USA Cassidy Wolf (h/t Graham Cluley).
According to court records, Abrahams told the women that he had used his control of the webcam to take photos of them while they were naked, and threatened to post the pictures online unless they sent him additional photos or stripped on Skype.
Abrahams pled guilty to three counts of extortion and one count of unauthorized computer access. He told the judge he had autism, and his lawyer said the diagnosis should be taken into account during sentencing. He will be sentenced in March 2014 -- he faces up to 11 years in prison and up to $1 million in fines.
