Bottom Line

Mentis is strong on data discovery and protection and possesses innovative scanning and masking technologies. However, it has no database assessment or threat prevention capabilities, and third-party integrations are lacking. A focus on Oracle and PeopleSoft databases makes it less applicable to other types of databases.

Product Description

The Mentis Suite comprises the following products:

  • iDiscover for automated high-performance discovery of sensitive information in databases
  • iMask for dynamic data masking
  • iScramble for static masking of non-production data
  • iMonitor for monitoring database activity and analyzing applications accessing those databases
  • iProtect for database access control
  • iRetire for automating data retention policies

Although each is offered independently, the Mentis products are built upon a common software platform and can be easily integrated into a single suite.

Database Security Features Rated

Databases served: Good

Mentis is primarily designed for Oracle and PeopleSoft, but it is able to discover the presence of other databases throughout the enterprise. This includes DB2, SQL Server, MySQL and Sybase.

Problem solved: Good

Mentis is particularly strong on discovery and protection of database information lurking throughout the enterprise. Mentis?research reveals that more than two-thirds of sensitive data is found in unexpected, hard-to-find locations, and existing systems sometimes detect too many false positives.

Value: Good

User comments note low cost and good functionality.

Implementation: Good

iDiscover makes finding sensitive data simple. Preconfigured, out-of-the-box data classifications of direct and potential customer-identifying data speed deployment.

Management: Fair

“The GUI is not simple and required further fine tuning,” said a security consultant.

Support: Good

Mentis offers support for a variety of data sources: popular relational, hierarchical, file systems, text, documents, and external files. User comments on Mentis support are favorable.

Cloud Features: Fair

Mentis can discover database information in the cloud, but functionality is limited.
