Bottom Line

Huawei is strongest with Asia and EMEA countries seeking value and performance, and for Huawei networking customers. Support for EMEA compliance requirements are another strength.

Company Description

Shenzhen, China-based Huawei is the 9th largest IT provider in the world. This networking and telecommunications equipment and services giant has been shipping firewalls for more than a decade. It also offers a variety of other network security appliances, including anti-DDoS and intrusion prevention.

Product Description

Gartner grades Huawei as a Challenger in its Magic Quadrant. Huawei offers a large range of firewall appliances. The Unified Security Gateway (USG) line is for the enterprise market, the Eudemon line is for carriers and service providers. Firewall and related security services can be used via the USG6000V virtual gateway to implement virtual multitenant separation. In addition, the company has added Cloud Application Security Awareness (CASA) and TLS/SSL decryption. The USG6000 series, for example, includes fine-grained application access control, policy automation, threat prevention technologies (cloud, sandbox and defense against unknown threats).

Features

Security and performance: No rating. NSS Labs said it was unable to test Huawei’s firewalls and urged a comprehensive evaluation before purchasing.

Value: Good. High performance and perceived value have led to above average sales growth.

Implementation: Very good. Users report relatively easy implementation, although the sample size is small. The ability to integrate with Huawei firewalls gets high marks.

Management: Good. While some would like to see better reporting and a more easily customized GUI, users are generally satisfied. One USG customer called it a “Very good firewall with great ability to see what end users are doing on the network. The ease of management is also great. Functionality of the firewall is also wonderful.”

Support: Very good. Users are generally content, although one cautioned that Huawei customers should make sure to purchase a support plan that meets their needs.

Cloud features: Good. The USG6000V supports a number of virtual environments, AWS and Azure.
