Shipping and logistics company Yusen Logistics (Americas) Inc. (YLA) recently began notifying an undisclosed number of current and former employees that their personal information may have been exposed when a password-protected, unencrypted laptop was stolen from a YLA employee’s vehicle on September 23, 2013.

The laptop held a spreadsheet containing payroll deduction information for current and former YLA employees between July and September 2013, including those employees’ names, addresses, Social Security numbers and payroll benefit deduction amounts.

The theft was reported to the police, but the laptop has not been recovered.

While the company doesn’t believe that the laptop was stolen for the information it contained, all those affected are being offered one year of free identity protection services from AllClear ID, including AllClear SECURE and AllClear PRO.

“We deeply regret any inconvenience this may cause you,” YLA senior vice president for human resources Kirsten M. Jensen wrote in the notification letter [PDF]. “To help prevent something like this from happening in the future, we are re-enforcing workforce training regarding the importance of securing personal information.”
