A Microsoft spokesman says Service Pack 3 for Windows 2000 is a collection of bug and security fixes that "focuses on a variety of customer-reported concerns with the Windows 2000 operating system." This is the first service pack to be released for Windows 2000 since company chairman Bill Gates pledged his support for strong security over new features.
This Windows 2000 update includes new middleware, in compliance with the antitrust agreement the company reached with the U.S. DOJ and nine settling states. The new middleware control can be used to set default middleware to compete with Microsoft's own products, according to a company spokesman.
The new service pack went out to the software giant's premier customers this past Tuesday, but it became available to everyone else today.
Users can get the new service pack via download or CD, which can be ordered, starting today, off the Microsoft.com Web site.
