Hackers Steal the Identities of All Doctors in Puerto Rico
The hackers apparently accessed the data by breaching the computer systems of the Puerto Rico College of Physicians and Surgeons.
According to the Associated Press, the personal information of all physicians licensed to practice in Puerto Rico was recently stolen by hackers who breached the computer systems of the Puerto Rico College of Physicians and Surgeons (h/t DataBreaches.net).
Eduardo Ibarra, president of the College of Physicians and Surgeons, says the information could easily be used to submit fake prescriptions and to engage in identity theft, and that doctors have reported receiving harassing e-mails following the breach.
As DataBreaches.net notes, there are currently about 10,000 physicians in Puerto Rico -- though it's not clear how far back the College of Physicians and Surgeons' database goes, so many more may be affected.
