The Bangkok Post reports that Mohamed Yassine Gharib, 26, of Morocco, was recently arrested in Thailand in connection with the theft of more than $18 million from bank accounts in Switzerland (h/t Softpedia).
Gharib, who was arrested in a Bangkok hotel lobby after he forgot his passport and returned to pick it up, is accused along with 10 other suspects of hacking into Swiss bank accounts and stealing funds.
His Thai girlfriend, Amornrat Hongklad, was also detained and will be placed under protection as a witness.
A Thai arrest warrant was issued for Gharib on February 28, 2014, after Swiss Police notified the Thai government that he had entered Thailand.
As Softpedia notes, Thailand isn’t proving to be a great place for hackers to hide out — in January of last year, Algerian hacker Hamza Bendelladj was arrested at Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi Airport after the FBI alerted Thai police to his arrival, and in March of this year, Russian hacker Farid Essebar was arrested in Bangkok after Swiss police told Thai authorities that Essebar had come to Thailand.
