Can New Intel Tech Revolutionize Application Security? [VIDEO]

Intel, which has both silicon as well software assets under its Intel Security umbrella, is working on technology that bridges both hardware and software to provide better security.

Intel is currently working on next generation technology known as Intel Software Guard Extensions (SGX) that will go beyond existing security protections to defend applications even in compromised environments.

In a video interview, Steve Grobman, Intel Fellow and CTO of Intel Security, details his role within Intel and the direction that Intel Security is now taking. Grobman has been at Intel for 21 years and brings a deep technical understanding of issues to his role. With the addition of McAfee to Intel’s security effort, silicon and software assets are now both moving in the same direction to help improve security, Grobman said.

Among the major new innovations that Intel is working on is SGX. Grobman explained that SGX enables an application to have a trusted set of code, even if the platform is compromised.

“SGX seals part of the application so that it can’t be tampered with by anything else that is running around it,” Grobman said. “So even if the rest of the machine is compromised, an attack wouldn’t be able to see inside critical areas of the applications.”
