Customers of PNC Financial Services Group, KeyCorp, and U.S. Bank recently experienced delays when trying to access their accounts online, as a result of a series of denial of service attacks by a group called the Izz ad-Din al-Qassam Cyber Fighters.
“An ‘unusual and coordinated high volume of traffic’ flooded usbank.com about 8:30 a.m., causing intermittent delays for customers trying to reach the site through the day, U.S. Bank spokesman Tom Joyce said Wednesday,” writes The St. Paul Pioneer Press’ Leslie Brooks Suzukamo. “Joyce said customer data and funds were secure.”
“‘What we have experienced is intensely heavy volume,’ Key spokeswoman Lynne Woodman said,” writes The Cleveland Plain Dealer’s Teresa Dixon Murray. “Key’s site has been sluggish off and on for a few days and is better than it was earlier in the week. Asked what Key is doing to improve the situation, Woodman said: ‘We’re doing all of the things we should be doing, but I can’t talk about it because it’s proprietary.'”
“A PNC spokesman said some [of] its customers may be experiencing difficulty logging into the bank’s website on the first attempt,” writes Reuters’ Rick Rothacker. “‘We are aware of the situation and are working to restore full access,’ spokesman Fred Solomon said.”
“The slowdowns come amid threats by a group that has vowed to wage a cyber-offensive against U.S. financial institutions in retaliation for the ‘Innocence of Muslims,’ an American-made, anti-Islamic film,” writes American Banker’s Brian Browdie. “‘These series of attacks will continue until the erasing of that nasty movie from the Internet,’ a group named Cyber fighters of Izz ad-din Al qassam posted recently on pastebin.com.”
