Central City Concern (CCC), a nonprofit serving the homeless in Portland, Ore., recently began notifying an undisclosed number of clients that their personal information may have been accessed inappropriately by a former employee.
The organization was notified by federal law enforcement on April 3, 2014 that the former employee had been charged with copying 15 clients’ information from CCC’s Employment Access Center program in order to use the data to file fraudulent tax returns.
While the former employee said only 15 records had been copied, all clients who records the former employee had access to are being offered one free year of access to Experian’s ProtectMyID Alert service.
“We have taken steps to help prevent such an incident from occurring in the future,” CCC director of social enterprises and employment services Clay Cooper wrote in the notification letter [PDF]. “CCC is contracting with an independent, third-party data security specialist to ensure that CCC has implemented all feasible safeguards to protect against future risk.”
