NHC Healthcare Oak Ridge Admits Data Breach

Tennessee’s NHC Healthcare, Oak Ridge recently posted a statement on its Web site [PDF] acknowledging that an unencrypted backup tape containing patient information has gone missing (h/t DataBreaches.net).

The patient information on the tape included an undisclosed numbers of patients’ names, Social Security numbers, birthdates, home addresses and medical information.

According to the statement, the incident is currently being investigated, and security measures have been “revised” to prevent a recurrence.

“While we believe there is a low risk of this information being used inappropriately, we understand any concern regarding possible unauthorized use of personal information,” administrator Jeff Tambornini said. “We encourage you to monitor your credit report for any signs of unauthorized activity.”
