Florida Corrections Officer Pleads Guilty to Fraud, Identity Theft

The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Florida has announced that Bernard Beliard, a former state corrections officer at the South Florida Reception Center (SFRC), pled guilty today to access device fraud and aggravated identity theft.

Court records state that Beliard leveraged his position at the SFRC to access the personal information of inmates who were checked in at the center from October 2012 to January 2013.

From October 24, 2012 through January 4, 2013, Beliard sold Florida Department of Corrections daily intake lists to an FBI informant for $9,600.

The FBI informant told Beliard that the lists, which contained approximately 805 inmates’ names and personal identifiers, including their Social Security numbers and birthdates, would be used to commit tax refund fraud.

Beliard is schedule to be sentenced on July 16, 2013.
