Attachmate Beefs Up Security

Attachmate announced it has released the upgraded Attachmate Reflection 2011 R2 family of products, including an updated suite for X Server 2011. The next-generation terminal emulation software features strengthened desktop and host security.

“With all of the news of sensitive customer data being compromised by large organizations, security is top of mind for our enterprise customers, Eric Varness, vice president of Marketing for Attachmate, said in a statement. “As such, we’re delivering a game-changing new capability that enables organizations to protect sensitive data on host screens, facilitating compliance with industry and government regulations, like PCI DSS,” he added.

The updates support the Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard (PCI DSS), the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), and additional new internal security policies that many organizations are adopting.

Among those are masking sensitive data on host screens, redacting data while users type so the information can’t be copied manually. It also blocks users from connecting to mission-critical applications over an unencrypted link, and enables administrators to assign different levels of access to private information on host computers, the company said.

Other new features include a “browser-like” user interface for host sessions meant to make the user experience simpler to navigate, and a new .NET embeddable control that Visual Studio developers can use to “augment and enhance” legacy applications without changing the host applications.

Additionally, Attachmate announced that the Reflection 2011 R2 updates have been certified as VMware ready.

Meanwhile, the company also launched the second release of its Reflection Suite for the X server — dubbed the Reflection Suite for X 2011 R2. The update provides added support for remote domain connections so that users can communicate across the corporate domain while still being able to access local applications without compromising security. The new release adds native support for 64-bit Windows 7.

Like the rest of the Reflection 2011 R2 family, Reflection Suite for X 2011 R2 is also certified VMware ready.
