Establishing Digital Trust: Don't Sacrifice Security for Convenience
Employee benefits broker Maschino, Hudelson & Associates (MHA) recently began notifying approximately 5,500 employees of its customers that their personal information may have been exposed when a laptop was stolen from the trunk of an MHA employee's car on or about April 2, 2014 (h/t DataBreaches.net).
The laptop contained the affected employees' names, addresses, birthdates and Social Security numbers.
"[MHA] maintains a variety of protocols, procedures and systems designed to prevent unauthorized access to a client’s personal information," the company said in a statement. "Employees receive regular training about how to protect confidential information. The Firm treats situations like these with the utmost importance not only to meet their legal obligations, but also the interests and concerns of their clients. Despite the Firm’s efforts, sometimes losses happen."

While no credit monitoring services are being offered to those affected, all recipients of the notification letter are being advised to consider placing fraud alerts on their credit files.
