European Cybercrime Center Targets Airline Ticket Fraud


European law enforcement agencies, supported by Europol's European Cybercrime Center (EC3), held a "day of action" on June 27, 2013 to target criminals who use stolen credit cards to buy airline tickets.

Law enforcement officers were deployed to stop and question people at 38 airports throughout Europe, and detained 43 people at airports in Austria, Germany, Greece, Finland, Ireland, Lithuania, Netherlands, Poland, Romania, Spain and the U.K.

"The individuals detained are linked to other criminal activities and will be investigated further in connection with the distribution of credit card data via the internet, intrusions into financial institutions’ databases, other suspicious transactions, drug trafficking, illegal immigration, counterfeit documents including IDs, and scams," Europol said in a statement.

The operation was coordinated by EC3, which deployed four mobile offices at airports in Amsterdam, Frankfurt, London and Madrid, which provided live access to Europol's centralized intelligence databases, along with financial data provided by Visa Europe.

"This is another great example of the increased cooperation between industry, Member States’ cybercrime units and the European Cybercrime Centre," Troels Oerting, Head of EC3, said in a statement. "This close way of working together is key if we want to keep pace with the development amongst organized criminal networks taking advantage of the new criminal opportunities in cyberspace. We are determined to continue developing new tools, new cooperation and new methods for fighting online crime."
