Secure Messaging App Wickr Launched for Android

The free secure messaging app Wickr, previously only available for iOS, was recently launched in beta for the Android OS (h/t CNET).

“While our free ephemeral messaging app is already available for Apple devices, the release of Wickr Android for public beta comes at an important moment in history as this right to privacy is challenged by governments, corporations, starfish organizations and lone criminals throughout the world,” company co-founder and CTO Dr. Robert Statica said in a statement [PDF].

The solution uses AES 256, RSA 4096, ECDH521, TLS and SHA256 to protect data in transit and at rest. All encryption keys are unique, used only once, and then forensically destroyed.

“Wickr on Android is the next step in our overall quest to protect users against the many threats to their privacy,” Statica said.
