Following Activision's release of a trailer for Black Ops 2 which portrays Anonymous as an enemy of the United States, members of the hacker group have responded by publishing Activision CEO Eric Hirshberg's personal information, including his home address, home phone number, and annual salary.
"[At] several points in Call of Duty’s promotional materials, a Guy Fawkes mask appears," explains Forbes' Dave Thier. "Each time it does, it seems to be identified with a hacker 'enemy.' The main plot from the game concerns hackers taking control of unmanned weapons in a near-future scenario. The Guy Fawkes mask was first associated with the man who tried to blow up Parliament in the early 17th century, and after with the anarchist hero V of V for Vendetta. Today, however, it has become the symbol of the loosely-bound hacker group 'Anonymous.' In most media, the mask and Anonymous have become one and the same."
Anonymous has also released a video in which the group threatens to hack Activision in response. "The video, which was posted by ALEXIUS ANON on May 4 and currently has 1,549 views, defends Anonymous as an organization of, 'fighters for freedom in every aspect of meaning,' stating, 'we are not terrorists.' ... 'This act will show you how serious our collective us and that we will protect any human who calls himself Anonymous,' says the video's narrator, who wears a Guy Fawkes mask," writes International Business Times' Jacob Kleinman.
