Varonis Systems has published a white paper entitled 10 Things IT Should Be Doing (but isn’t), which advises on best practices for cleaning up access control, how to perform data usage audits in minutes, the fastest process for finding data owners in a few clicks, and the 10 IT must-do's for unstructured data protection.

"Today’s status quo is less than ideal when it comes to protecting spreadsheets, documents, images and the like on file servers," the white paper states. "Unfortunately, IT personnel -- rather than the people that own the data -- are the ones tasked with its safekeeping. This, of course, creates a problem since IT isn’t privy to what a user’s business need is for specific data sets, not to mention that file servers are swelling with the stuff."
