Security vendor eSoft has added intrusion detection and prevention features to its InstaGate appliance that enable it to detect and block malicious intrusions.

Through an agreement with Latis Networks, which offers the StillSecure suite of software for reducing the risk of network attacks, eSoft provides the Intrusion Detection and Prevention SoftPak as an option that can be automatically downloaded to its InstaGate devices.

eSoft has added value to the Latis software by working to improve its accuracy, as well as by delivering it on the appliance platform, according to eSoft officials.

"The intrusion detection business has a reputation for generating many false positives that are more trouble than they are worth," says David Aylesworth, eSoft product manager. "Our goal was accuracy and automated response."

Recognized signatures are delivered with recommended remediation actions. Like many intrusion detection products in the industry, the basis of the Latis software is the Snort open source engine. The software development kit provided by eSoft to its software partners including Latis, allows the signature set to be tailored to lower the rate of false positives generated.

The Intrusion Detection SoftPak works with the firewall within InstaGate to provide a second level of defense. The attack responses can be customized to ensure that specific security requirements are met. A Web-based interface allows organizations to monitor the status of their network security from any browser.

The Intrusion Detection SoftPak identifies attacks that employ the latest detection-evading techniques, and it provides reports on potentially malicious activities directed at the network.

The price for the low-end 25-user InstaGate appliance is $1,200, including the firewall, virtual private network and the ability to host SoftPaks. The Business Model costs $2,000 and the Professional Model costs $3,500, the variation based on the number of users accessing the network. The SoftPaks are priced based on the number of users, with a range of $100 to $100,000. Most SoftPaks are sold on an annual subscription basis.
