The University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC) recently announced that as many as 27,000 of its 62,000 employees may have been affected by a recent data breach that exposed employee tax information, including Social Security numbers (h/t Becker's Hospital CIO).

While it's not yet clear how the data was accessed, at least 788 UPMC employees have already been victims of tax fraud.

"We take this crime very seriously," UPMC spokesperson Gloria Kreps told the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review. "We alerted authorities immediately after we discovered and confirmed unauthorized access and have been putting our full resources behind efforts to investigate and secure our systems."

All potentially affected employees are being offered free access to identity theft protection services from LifeLock, acccording to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.
