North Carolina State University researchers recently discovered new Android malware, called HippoSMS, in unofficial Chinese Android app markets. The malware sends premium rate SMS messages and blocks the user's carrier from informing them of the charges.
"The malware is embedded in a seemingly legitimate application in the market, and once users download and install that app, the fun begins," writes Threatpost's Dennis Fisher.
"This is just the latest in a series of similar incidents in which attackers and scammers have inserted either outright malicious apps or seemingly benign apps containing malware into app markets," Fisher writes.
