Thousands of customer details were stolen from British gambling company Ladbrokes, though the company says the breach did not access any bank details or passwords.

"The Mail on Sunday was approached by an Australian man named Daniel who claimed to have access to Ladbrokes' database of 4.5 million customers," writes The Register's John Oates. "Daniel gave the paper 10,000 customer files to show he was serious."

"The man, who claimed to represent a Melbourne-based firm, said he had worked for Ladbrokes as a security consultant two years before," Oates writes. "He said he'd been given the information by a relatively junior member of staff."
