The U.S. Department of Defense has pulled FamilySafe parental control software from its online store serving military families because the company collects childrens data, according to the Electronic Privacy Information Center (EPIC).
EPIC has filed a complaint [PDF file] with the Federal Trade Commission alleging that Echometrix, maker of FamilySafe parental control software, violates the Childrens Online Privacy Act by collecting personal information from children and disclosing it to third parties for market intelligence purposes, writes CNET News Elinor Mills. Echometrix denies the allegations.
Asked for comment, a Department of Defense spokeswoman said the Echometrix product was available on the online mall from September 25 until October 15, Mills writes.
