Hacker Guccifer Arrested
Romanian authorities claim former cab driver Marcel Lazar Lehel, 42, is the prolific hacker.
Romania's Directorate for Investigating Organized Crime and Terrorism (DIICOT) today announced the arrest of a Romanian man believed to be the hacker "Guccifer," who last year breached e-mail accounts belonging to members of the Bush family and the Deputy CIO of the U.S. Defense Intelligence Agency, among many others (h/t Help Net Security).
The Smoking Gun, which published several of Guccifer's leaks, identifies the man as Marcel Lazar Lehel, 42, a former cab driver who received a three-year suspended sentence in 2012 for breaching several Romanian public figures' e-mail accounts.
Guccifer recently claimed to have breached the Yahoo e-mail account of George-Cristian Maior, the head of the Romanian Intelligence Service.
According to the Smoking Gun, the hacker mentioned that breach in e-mails to the site last month, stating, "now i am in a close fight with a secret service chief ... i don t know what near future hold for me so i will schedule a email link for you… with my archive in case i disappear."
