The Toronto Sun reports that a 12-year-old boy from Quebec has admitted having hacked several government and police Web sites during the spring of 2012, taking down some sites for as long as two days and causing an estimated $60,000 worth of damage (h/t Softpedia).

The boy pleaded guilty to three charges related to hacking the Web sites of the Montreal Police, the Quebec Institute of Public Health, the Chilean government, and some non-public sites.

While the student launched the attacks in the name of Anonymous, his actions apparently weren't politically motivated -- he traded stolen information to members of Anonymous for video games.

"He saw it as a challenge, he was only 12 years old," his lawyer said. "There was no political purpose."
